Refracting Telescope

ump-2_edited.png

This telescope is an example of a slightly more sophisticated, smaller handheld telescope that was popularized in the 1800s.

This is a telescope dating back to the 1740s, created in London England by George Adams Senior. It is made out of brass with an ornate casing and handsome brass tripod stand for easier viewing. This is a relatively sophisticated telescope that was taken care of by its owner, receiving restoration care in 1770 by Edward Nairne. This telescope comes over 100 years after the first known telescope in 1608, which is said to have originated in the Netherlands. Although still mainly reserved for the wealthy, this telescope reflects the rising popularity and accessibility of telescopes by the late 1700s. The brass stand contains multiple articulating portions that interlock to create a solid stand. The top portion of brass is adjustable to allow smooth movement when viewing the night sky.

This is the Nebra Sky Disc, one of the first known human made depictions of space. On its bronze surface, a drawing of the moon with golden star clusters is visible. This piece provides confirmation that dating back as far as 1600 BCE, stars were being tracked and changes were being noted in the night sky.

Fly me to the moon

This Frank Sinatra hit, recorded in 1954, is an upbeat swing about going to space and falling in love. Often times, the two are intertwined by themes of getting lost in the vastness of it all.

Interstellar, 2014

This film swept the pop culture scene in 2014, gaining immense popularity amongst space enthusiasts and movie goers alike. Interstellar takes place in a portion of space where a single hour is equal to seven years on Earth. It is a dramatic look into the depth and complexity of the universe, and a simultaneous, heart wrenching display of the human condition.
